Must so many of the editorials in Childhood be on the subject of disasters? Last time it was the tragic events in Beslan, North Ossetia, near Chechnya, where close to half of the 335 hostages killed were children in a truly human-made catastrophe. This time, the Tsunami. It seems impossible to ignore such massive adversity. The Tsunami disaster that hit the countries around the Indian Ocean has claimed a staggering 300,000 victims – perhaps even more. It has left behind homeless people to be counted in the millions. The homes of unbelievable numbers have been destroyed and subsistence for already poor people wiped away by mighty waves.
