This paper focusses on the adequacy of speech act theory as an instrument for the analysis and explanation of ordinary conversation. It discuss a number of examples brought forward by critics of a speech act theoritical perspective and argues that, contrary to what these critics claim, such a perspective not only can but must be applied in order to account satisfactorily for many of the functional and sequential of ordinary conversation.
