Isi artikelIn this article, we respond to two recent contributions to EL T Journal (Volume 51/2) by Mark Tully and Rama Mathew. Drawing upon our ex- perience in South Africa, we spell out a role for EL T specialists in main- taining and promoting multilingualism. We argue that while EL T specialists must, of course, contribute to policy debates on the hegemony of English and the maintenance of multilingualism, they should also engage in 'pro- fessional activism' (Prabhu 1987: 108) by demonstrating through classroom practice the positions they take on multilingualism. Further, we emphasize the role of EL T specialists in making classroom practice visible and hence offering teachers inspirational examples of pedagogic change.
