The development of a new food system and the development of agro - industrial biotechnology influence each other mutually. Biotechnology, in this article analyzed as a social - technical ensemble, reflects the surpassing of industrial by post - industrial society. Its products - seeds, enzymes and biocatalysts - help tpo create new social relations in global food systems, in which the traditional borders between political, economic and social - cultural aspects are blurred. It is argued here that these new biotechnology products are "politiciaing products" transforming the global food system, in which a new bio - power system emerges. The hegemonic position of the bio - power system is maintained through three separation processes. Yet various initiatives are challenging the bio - power system, not by rejecting, but by transforming biotechnology and by connecting what is separated in the bio - power system.
