Isi artikelA clmroom experiment involv- ing seventy-nine first semester Spanish students at the University of CentralArkansas measured the relationship bet ween foreign language vocabulary visualaids; vocabulary achievement scorns, and student modality strengths. The ob- jective was to determine whether students of dv- ferent perceptual learning styles (e.g., auditory and visual) would achieve differential scorn on a multiple-choice test over a three-part foreign language (Swahili) vocabulary presentation us- ing pictorial, verbal, and combination pictorial- verbal aids. The results showed significant positive correlation between the visual para- meter as measured by the Swassing-Barbe Modality Index and scorn on vocabulary items pmnted and tested with combinationpictorial- verbal aids. Conversely, there was a negative cor- relation between the auditory pammeter and the com bination pictorial-verbal vocabulary sec- tion. Median scorn on the pictorial and verbal sections were too close for conclusions to be dmwn regamling the efficiency of those visual aids for diffetent learning styles. Howevec the ovemll mlts suggest that further investigation will prove useful in devising the best combina- tions of visual aids, particularly for the predominantly visual or auditory student. A serendipitous finding was that the auditory students in this study had genemlly lower gmdes and ACTscorn, and may be most benefited by individualized study ai&.
