In the mid 1970s some developed countries in an attempt to reduce their dependency on crude oil as their source of energy, began to look for an alternative energy surce to generate electricity. Nuclear power is the answer. Nuclear power is considered by some ot be the best solution for meeting energy demand and supply because it can generate massive quantities of electricity. By the end of the twentieth century, most countries in the world will have built nuclear power plants to provide elecricity. However, some crucial problems remain regarding the existence of nuclear power, such as radioactive waste and the risk of exploitation. Therefore the existence of nuclear power remains a controversial issue. Most people, specially environmentalists disagree with the use of nuclear power while most government, including the indonesian government, believe that nuclear power is the best solution to the energy crisis. This study does not aim to analyze this controversial issue, and does not make conclusions about whether we need nuclear power or not. The study analyzes the root of the debate over nuclear power, that is about the energy problem, specifically how to meet the demand and supply. Questions that I try to answer are how the condition of energy sector in indonesia, is will energy problem be a crucial one that may disturb the development process in the country or not, and what potential factors that could trigger energy crisis in the future.
