Foreign language faculty have various needs for professional development. Some of these are unique to the discipline and others areshared with all other academics. This article examines the derno- graphics of foreign language departments today, the tasks which language professors undertake aspart of their professional lives, and the results of a survey of foreign language professors in three state-supported institutions in which faculty have rank ordered their professional needs. Implications for faculty develop- ment at the department level are suggested
