Isi artikelObjective, corpus and methods. The purpose of this paper is to examine both qualitatively and quantitatively the diachronic evolution of referential behavior in medical English written discourse within a social constructivist perspective. To this end, I analyzed a corpus of 162 medical articles published in 34 different British and American medical journals between 1810 and 1995. The total number of reference patterns was recorded in each article and these were classified according to the following typology: general references, specific references, verbatim quotes, self-references, footnotes and end-lists. The frequency of occurrence of the different referential patterns was then computed per decade, and the results thus obtained were grouped according to the four distinct year-blocks identified in a previous study. Between-block comparisons were performed by means of chi-square tests.
