Isi artikelOn the basis of social semiotics and cognitive linguistics, a framework is proposed to make availeble to translation research the concepts of semantic signification and pragmatic significance. Two sample text of English propose and poetry are closely scrutinized with respect to those concerns, and their translations into Chinese analyzed. In the process a case is made for the use of notions such as transitivity, theme-rheme orgaization, prominence, perspective, specificity, and secondary activation, to better understand the evolving concept of equivalence. The effort brings a considerable measure of objectivity and concretness to the quest for quality in translation, thereby providing a guide to judging performance.
