Isi artikel
This article investigates the extent to which beginning Japanese classroom learners of English learn the rule for suppliance of the copula be beyond initial memorization of chunks without explicit teaching. This is a cross-sectional study in which data are gathered from 111 students of Grade 8 and 107 students of Grade 9 through a written elicitation test. The paper analyzes each participant's stage of learning on the chunk-rule continuum by examining the production in different linguistic contexts. The data show that there is no significant difference in the progress of the two groups and that less than half the participants have learned the rule successfully. The paper concludes that some explicit teaching of the rule is needed.
