Isi artikelIn language teaching it is important to relate practice to fundamental ideas about the nature of language, learning, and teaching. The teaching of languages for specific pulposes has been criticized for being all practice and no theory because there has been limited concern in the literature with fundamental ideas. This article identifies some gaps in the literature on teaching languages for specific purposes. The article argues the need to examine views of learning and the functions of teaching as well as theories of language use in teaching languages for specific pulposes and proposes a conceptual framework as an agenda for examining theory and practice.
