Isi artikelBeyond the curricular teaching of writing, the importance of the instruction in communication techniques is growing, both in higher education and in the professionnal world. Howevel; these programs, as they aim to be more than simple training sessions, raise some fundamental questions. Since this field is not really an academic subject, the nature and the scientific basis of its body of knowledge are still uncertain. The study of the transposition of quantitative data and other elements from lexicology to this field gives an opportunity to address this question. Fifty writing manuals, published in six countries, have been reviewed. The very important distortions observed between the information provided in those books and the available scientific data show the particular epistemological weakness of this domain and the extent of the didactical problems it faces.
