Because of its very nature lNTERLANGUAGE (lL) has always been an important issue in connection with language acquisition even before the term and its quasi-synonyms were coined. Its highly disputed characteristics and definition have sometimes made it appear in a somewhat 'mysterious' light. After a short discussion of its evolution and some of its theoretical aspects, its practical direct and indirect relevance for FLT including the socio-linguistic phenomenon of international varieties of English (ElL) also the subject language awareness is described.
