Isi artikelThis study investigated the process of how the Japanese learners of English transmit information in their target language, English. Four consecutive pictures were shown to the Japanese university students and they were asked to describe them in two minutes. After repeating the same procedure four times, the process of information transmission was observed. Also analyzed was the relationship between the amount of utterance in the information. The data analysis indicated that (a) the amount of utterance produced by the learners was not necessarily related to the amount of information, (b) sentence patterns and the distribution pattern of the parts of speech in learners' English showed some difference from native speakers' English, and (c) the learners had potential ability in their oral proficiency if enough time was given to them. Some pedagogical implications were also suggested.
