Isi artikelGrammar and vocabulary are essential components of all language courses yet they are difficult to teach and time consuming to learn. This paper discusses the metaphoric I and prototypical aspects of prepositions, adjectives and other word forms and considers how these may contribute to improved grammar and vocabulary learning. The central position of metaphor in the structure of language, its role in the development of new concepts and its cognitive functions provide associative networks which link phrasal verbs, prepositions and adjectives on the basis of semantic categories. These could be activated to simplify and accelerate the learning tasks of ESI)EFL students. The learning and teaching of grammar and vocabulary are among the most time-consuming and burdensome of all areas involved in the study of language. Any measures which might improve the quality, speed and amount of learning achieved are worth close examination. This paper considers how metaphor's central position in the structure of language, its contribution to concept development and its cognitive functions endow it with properties uniquely combined to assist in the learning of grammar and vocabulary. To this end two inter-related functions of metaphor are addressed in this paper. In the first instance metaphor is a function of linguistic change and language extension. In the second it acts as a means of cognitive growth and concept development.
