This article argues that, not only can literature be useful for developing second language skills, but that even literature using highly deviant language can be exploited to raise learners' awareness of how language functions. A poem by the idiosyncratic American poet, e.e.cummings, is used to exemplify how highly deviant poetry can be used in the TESOL classroom to raise consciousness and promote language awareness.
