Isi artikelLanguage teachers frequently draw on their experience as L2 learners to develop an understanding of how to teach a second or foreign language. Some teacher educators encourage such an approach by incorporating it into their curriculum. To exploit fully that kind of experience, the authors suggest, as a variation on the language learning diary proposed by Bailey (1990) and others, a course designed for professional teacher development, attending more to the other learners in the class and less to personal introspection. This course is designed to make students aware of both student and teacher reactions to classroom practices, to promote insights about second language theory and practice, and to give students an awareness of the classroom as a rich environment for research. Borrowing the participant observation approach of ethnographic research, the course relies on students' sharing their observations and personal insights in focussed discussions of a language class which they attend as ordinary students. The article provides the rationale for such a course as well as a sample syllabus with possible modifications for groups at different stages of professional development, suggested readings, and topics for focussing class discussions.
