Isi artikelDrilling a small hole on a thin stainless steel by mechanical drilling is somewhat difficut. The mechanical force tends to bend the hole suface that leads to a poor hole surface. Moreover, the ductility of the material may cause burr in the surgace. To solve the difficulties in machining a small hole using mechanical drilling. EDM is used to drill small holes. The small hole (refers to hole of less than 1 mm diameter) is drilled on a SUS 304 stainless steel hypodermic needle. Drillings are conducted on the eurospark 740 charmilles EDM machine using 0,9 mm diameter of graphtie as electordes. Several combinations of polarity, pulse durationa nd dsicharge current are applied in the experiment. Machining time, hole quality and tool wear are observed. The result shows that under certain machining conditions, EDM using graphite electrode is able to produce burr - free holes in an acceptable drilling time.
