The swelling phyllosilicate minerals known as clays. Clays is natural materials that builds from polimerisation of silicate and aluminate ions. These ubiquitous minerals are components of many soils and sediments and often are found as large mineralogically pure deposits. Because of their small particle size (< 2 micrometers) and unsual intercalation properties, they affords an appreciable surface area for the adsorbtion of inorganic molecules and catalysis. Indeed, the probable catalyst role of clays has been recognized in several natural processes, including petroleoum - forming reaction, chemical transformation in soils and reaction related to chemical evolution. Recent advances in the pillarisation and the intercalation chemistry of clays has rekindled itnerest in these minerals as catalysts or catalyst supports. One of new class of itnercalates incroporates metal complex catalysts between the silicate layers. A second new class intercalation compounds makes are of robust cations as molecular props or pillars between the silicate layers. The pillaring phenomenon leads to the formation of porous networks analogous to zeolite. Since there of pillared clays can have pore size larger than zeolities. They are far a promising new minerals of facilitating the reactions of large molecules.
