Isi artikel
Dehydration of ethyl alcohol catalyzed by sulphuric acid is one of methods for producing diethyl ether. Diethyl ether has many uses in human life such as anaesthetic, organic synthetic and solvent. This research was aimed to find out an optimum condition for dehydration process. Process was run on a three - necked spherical glass reactor equipped with thermometer, mechanical stirrer and two series condenser. Reactor was loaded with ethyl hydrogen sulphate, which has made by reacting ethyl alcohol and sulphuric acid on an erlenmeyer. It was heated until 140 - 142 celcius degree and set on this temperature. Heated ethyl alcohol was fed into reactor for a definite time. The condensed product was stored into erlenmeyer with ice on the outer side to keep product as liquid. This experiment was aimed to study the process time and also the effect of ethyl alcohol used on the process. The optimum of the process condition were one hour process and 2,4687 gmole of ethyl alcohol. For this condition, the conversion of ethyl alcohol was 35.23 %.
