This study describes the use of conjuncts in two genres of written English: business news stories and academic journal articles about economics. The first part presents a quantitative analysis of conjunct usage for each genre in terms of overall frequency of conjunct use and frequency of specific types of conjuncts. This analysis shows a much higher frequency of conjunct use in the academic journal texts. The quantitative patterns of conjunct use are then discussed in relation to a description of the two genres of texts, the communicative functions each genre serves and the pragmatic factors which influence its forms. Finally, there is a brief discussion of the pedagogical implications of this study with some suggestions about directions for further research.
