The relationship between training and ESP has not always been an easy one. This paper argues that the relative neglect of research into training by ESP practitioners has been unwarranted and presents the case for a shift in perspective. It seeks to show that training is a much broader concept than is often assumed and that at both theoretical and practical levels it has much in common with our own discipline. The relationship between training and education is explored and lines of possible collaboration are outlined. A case is made for the development of greater sensitivity to training practices and the broader organizational context in which they operate. Finally, areas of potential benefit to ESP are indicated, and it is suggested that there are strong reasons for turning attention to training as soon as possible.
