With a shift of emphasis from communicative language to communicative people, the course described here sees learners' "illocutionary force" as providing some of the raw material for language development, and its suitable deployment as offering the basis of a communicative pedagogy, to be distinguished from other, noncommunicative pedagogies. An account of how this course pursues the language purposes of its students, through the interactive demand for more specific articulation, to the defining of a piece of work authentic to the learner, is followed by an elucidation of the theoretical underpinnings of the course made against a critique of the "communicative" movement itself.
