Isi artikelTwo sets of data were collected on the Dutch-French interlanguage of two university economics students in order to investigate whether the notion of domain as outlined has any bearing on variability in the utterances produced by the learners in the target language. It was found that when style and activity type were held constant, differences in domain were associated with variability in such areas as sentence embedding, variety of connectives, error correction, appropriacy of lexical verb-choice, frequency of nonverbal strategies, and overall satisfaction with performance in the target language. Hypotheses related to the acquisition of lexical systems within subject areas are formulated for further research.
