Isi artikelWe have compared sentence stress production in normal phonation and whisper in two native speakers of Finnish using acoustical analysis, esophageal pressure measurements and electromyography. The average peak values of the fundamental frequency, intensity, esophageal pressure and the EMG recordings from the thyroarytenoid and cricothyroid muscles were measured and their intercorrelations were calculated. In normal speech the cricothyroid activity and the subglottal pressure showed a significant correlation with the peak values of the acoustical indicators of stress for both subjects. The thyroarytenoid muscle showed a statistically significant correlation with the fundamental frequency for only one subject. In whisper, the role of the cricothyroid muscle in stress production was negligible. The thyroarytenoid muscle showed a peak of activation for both subjects in relation to stress production. However, its correlation with intensity of whisper was not significant. The major factor contribution to stress production in whisper appeared to be the subglottal pressure. Further studies on EMG from other laryngeal muscles, and simultaneous recordings of aerodynamic and biomechanical events are needed to reveal the obviously complex inter- actions between laryngeal and respiratory mechanisms in stress production during whisper.
