The purpose of this experiment was to study the articulatory dynamics of jaw movements and to estimate the articulatory effort when the speaking rate changes. We measured articulatory dynamics (displacement, transition time and velocity) of jaw movement at the two (slow and fast) speaking rates and estimated dynamic character- istics of a jaw articulatory system represented by a second-order biomechanical system. Two male subjects spoke at two speaking rates. Speech material consisted of the form /V. V2 V3/, where VI and V3 were all possible combinations of Ii, 0, e/ and V2 was one of the five vowels Ii, u, 0, a, e/. The results of this study show that the adjustments of speaking rate were achieved by strategies that differed between the subjects and these tendencies of individual differences are in agreement with those reported by Kuehn and Moll. Individual differences were also observed in the dynamic characteristics of the jaw articulatory system; one subject performed faster movement by controlling primarily the damping factor and the other performed by controlling the angular frequency. The effect of speaking rate on the magnitude of articulatory efforts was clearly observed during the closing movements. The subject who demonstrated rapid movement at the fast speaking rate may have increased the articulatory force in the jaw muscular system.
