This study was designed to determine how segmental durations in children's speech are affected by differences in type of speech sample. Ten five-year-old male subjects produced repeated utterances of isolated meaningful CVC words, isolated nonsense CVC syllables and the meaningful CVC words in a carrier phrase. Initial consonant voice onset times, vowel durations and syllable durations were measured. A number of significant differences were found including: (1) voicing leads were more common for /b/ in isolated syllables than in syllables in the phrase; (2) VOTs for /p/ and /k/ differed for meaningful syllables but not for nonsense syllables; and (3) vowel durations constituted a smaller proportion and the final stop consonant closure duration a larger proportion of total syllable duration for the meaningful syllables in the phrase than in isolation. The results suggest that type of speech sample does affect differently certain segmental durations and the relationships among them. The effect of speech sample type on intrasubject variability was minimal.
