Courses in English for Academic Purposes, aimed at learners who require English to study their own specialisms, have been successfully organized for several years in many parts of the world. Such courses, however, are often regarded as self-contained entities, and insufficient attention is paid either to interrelations with other aspects of language teaching or to relevant sources of research. The paper argues that more emphasis should be given to such research sources and suggests areas for investigation. Comment is also made on the nature of the relationship between teaching and research.
