No one can deny that the result of english teaching in SMA in indonesia is a big failure and that the failure has resulted from many factors, the most important of which is the large mixed ability classes. there are forty to fifty students in one class and they have different levels of proficiencys, abilitys, etc. The teacher on the other hand, feels that he could do a better job in a smaller class, which is the most impossible thing to realize. Pressed by the limited time allowment to cover the enormity of his teaching assignment, he often does not want to bother much. The frustrating situation makes him take techniques with which he can control his class and end up the class, leving no impression of being irresponsible. Discussing the meaning of the new words in a short reading passage or a grammar discussion is a much as he can do. The way he practices is the one not at all recommanded by the communciative approach. As we all have seen and accepted, this is the approach the 1984 curriculum recommends. Finocchiaro and Brumfit (1983 : 90) state two assupmtions that underlie the approach. The first assumption is that we are concerned in the classroom with language use..............
