Isi artikelA main comment addressed to Pierrehumbert's contribution is that the relation between phonology and phonetics is closer than she supposes; it is, I claim, the relation of a coarser-grained level of description of a talker's vocal tract actions during speech to a finer-grained level. A main comment addressed to Nearey's contribution is to dispute that any of his models can handle perception of coarticulatory influences by humans, on grounds both that the effects that do influence perception span domains wider than the diphone and on grounds that the nature of the influences on perception cannot all be handled by the "bias" term in the model. I enjoyed reading all of the manuscripts submitted for this special issue. My comments are addressed to just two of the contributors to whom I thought I had something useful and possibly new to say.
