Isi artikelThe paper describes a new project designed to analyze the metrical structure of orally produced poetry in various languages, using acoustic phonetic techniques. A basic assumption in this project is the notion that the suprasegmental structure of a language is crystallized, as it were, in the metric structure of its traditional poetry: it is no accident that the Kalevala meter arose in Finland, or the deseterac in Serbia. To understand better the rhythm of spoken language, one should look at the rhythmic structure of poetry developed in that language over the years; patterns that may be imperfectly realized in prose may be manifested in a more regular fashion in poetry. Examples are presented from Estonian, Latvian, Finnish, and Japanese.
