Isi artikel
A developmental model of adult phonological organization (DAPHO) is presented which attempts to reconcde the often opposed views of speech as a sequence of discrete, linguistically motivated units, and as a physically continuous and unsegmentable signal. DAPHO acknowledges phonemes but has nothing corresponding to traditional allophonic rules, and it is proposed as a partial solution to the problems of invariance and variability, segmentation and coarticulation. Covering the central stages involved in both speech production and recognition, DAPHO builds on a model first postulated to account for aspects of the young child's speech behaviour featuring holistic single words, and it includes phonological structure, units and operations as developmentally later superstructure.
