An overview is given of the durational characteristics of vowel sounds in the readings of three slow and three fast talkers. The effects on duration of tempo, syllabic stress and a variety of contexts are described, and the productions of the individual talkers are analyzed. The data are compared to a number of previous studies of vocalic duration with particular regard for the potential utility of durational cues for automatic speech recognition. Some generalizations made in the literature are not supported by these new data.
