This paper considers the representation of stimuli in the peripheral parts of the auditory system. We take as an example the representation of steady-state vowels. The spectra of these stimuli are represented across the best frequency (BF) or "place" dimension of a population of auditory-nerve fibers. We discuss average rate and temporal (phaselocking) measures of the fiber responses as bases for such place representations. Formant frequencies are well represented in terms of either measure. At the level of the anteroventral cochlear nucleus, temporal-place representations are preserved in populations of "primary-like" units and not in "chopper" units. We present preliminary evidence that the chopper units may sharpen a rate-place representation of the vowel spectrum.
