Since Stevens' contribution to phonetic theory has become so largeconcerning the whole patterning in features of sound systems-we will focus our comments on vowels, for they offer, in our opinion, the best field to test the power of his theory to produce phonetic categorization from what is commonly thought to be a continuum.
