Isi artikelThis paper gives a concise description of a multi-layered architecture for a multi-lingual text-to-speech system under development in the ESPRIT project POLYGLOT-I. It is argued that this novel architecture is needed to deal with problems resulting from attempts to include phrase level phonology rules and to improve the quality of the prosody rules. At the same time, it should facilitate the implementation of many languages in a single uniform structure. Then the use of articulatory guidance in rule development is discussed. The paper ends with a description of the working environment that is being built to support the rule developers.
