Isi artikel
It was hypothesized that subjects of mental verbs are conceived of as agents of sorts. This was borne out by the finding that these subjects were judged to have more control of the situation and more intention than the objects of mental verbs, regardless of whether the subject was the experiencer (as in John admires/ sees/ expects Paul.) or the source of the experience (as in John impresses/ shocks/ influences Paul.) The fact that the subject is the focus and in first position cannot account fully for this effect, since it was obtained also for passive sentences (for Control) and sentences having the structure of It is Paul whom John admires.
