Isi artikelThe eceng gondok (Eichhornia crassipes mart) is water hyacinth which has capability to absorb the toxic chemical substances from polluted water. Therefore eceng gondok could be used as a biological treatment system for traeting wastewater. especially phenolic compounds in pharmacy industrial polutant before releasing to environment. This experiment was conducted to investigate the removal efficiency of phenols from pharmacy industrial pollutant by using eceng gondok which was combined with aeration and without aeratiob system, time contact assestment that's needed by eceng gondok to achieve allowable phenol concentration in industrial pollutant and toxicity test of phenolic compounds on carp. Decreasing rate of phenolic componds in medium is close depend on phenols concentration in wastewater medium and treatment system. Using eceng gondok with aeration system (S1) has average removal efficiency 95,27%, eceng gondok without aeration system (S2) 75.89% aeration system only (S3) 69,26% and natural system (S4) 13,88%. The contact time for S1 has range 1,9 - 3,46 days and S2 has range 3,78 - 5,96 days for phenols concentration interval 5 - 20 ppm. The death of fish in the phenol toxicity test is close depend on the kind of medium. The wastewater medium has short time to killing carp popilation compared to fresh hours and 3,75 ppm for 48 hours in fresh water medium and Lt50 has range 65,74 to 10,08 minutes for phenol concentration interval 0,5 - 20 ppm in wastewater medium.
