This paper is an introductory summary of the five following papers by J, Jenkins. W. Strange. B. Rakerd and R. Verbrugge. R. Diehl et al., and C. Fowler. The focus of the set of papers is on recent findings that are inconsistent with traditional views of vowel perception. And, as a set, they suggest an alternative approach to theory that emphasises the importance of acoustic changes across time.
