Isi artikel
In the context of models of word recognition that assume that word processing is holistic, an interesting paradox emerges to the extent that it is difficult for such models to explain how perceivers can ever "see" the letters within the words in the sense of providing them with specific encodings. It was suggested that one possible explanation is that subjects may decode word codes within memory, and then examine the contents of their memory rather than directly scanning the display itself. Two experiments that explored that issue by comparing the way subjects search for target letters in integratable words as opposed to unintegratable consonant arrays are reported. Although the task in both cases was a visual scan, the results of both experiments indicated that while subjects did appear to visually scan the consonant arrays, their search of the word displays was more characteristic of a memory.
