Taking as a starting point the hypothesis that all 'true' pronouns (in a well-defined sense) have a linguistic antecedent even when neither the sentence nor the text provide one explicitly, we review some recent approaches where the contrary is defended or implied. It is shown that these approaches run counter to the facts at crucial points. The cases discussed lead to a further development of our own views with respect to a unified approach of pronominal anaphora.
