The study examined the cognitive processes of answering wh- questions, In Experiments I and 2, subjects who answered wh- questions about single sentences needed more time to indicate that they did not know the answer than to provide a correct response, This contrasted with earlier findings of fast don't know responses to yes-no questions, In Experiments 3 and 4, don't know' responses to wh- questions about text were likewise lengthy, This favored the hypothesis that the long don't know' latencies resulted from extended long-term memory searches rather than from a serial scan of verbatim memory, In Experiment 5, it was predicted that intermingling yes-no and wh- questions would result in long don't know 'latencies for both types, This prediction was supported, An integrated process model of answering wh- and yes-no questions was presented.
