Isi artikel
In this paper I critically discuss methods for identying interruptions and suggest a qualitative rather than a quantitative approach to their analysis. Attention to the occurrence of candidate interruptions can be coupled with attention to discoursal indications of interactants' perception of them as interruptiond. Compalints about interruptions and palliatives offered are both indications that their producers perceive some infringement of speaker rights to have occured. My main example is a husband's complaint of being repeatedly interrupted by his wife. I propose that we can examine such management of interruptions to reveal asymmetries in speaker rights lurking in ostensibly 'equal encounters'. Who is allowed to interrupt whom?
