Isi artikelIn an attempt to replicate a set of results recently reported by A. Koriat (Experiment 3, 1981, Memory & Cognition, 9, 587-598), it was found that semantic priming and word repetition were additive effects. The first two experiments in this report explored the generality of this finding by using a wide range of stimulus material. Experiment 3 was designed to evaluate the effect of practice on semantic priming in the absence of target repetition and indicated that word repetition and the additive effect of context were not confounded by practice. Experiment 4 found that the additive nature of these two effects applies to both high- and low-frequency targets. Finally, Experiment 5 indicated that context and repetition are additive under conditions which tend to maximize these effects. Implications of these results for current models of word recognition are discussed.
