Computers are now used in every walk of life. Although in many instances computers are used to perform their intended role in a stand alone mode, in others there is a need to interwork and exchange data with others computers. The data exchange operates according to a defined protocol - set of rules - by exchanging messages, both user data and additional control information, with a corresponding peer layer in remote system. The best known protocol standard is X25 and this standard specifies an interface between a host system and a packet switched network The X 25 standard specifically calls out three layers offunctionality which are Physical layer, Link layer and Packet layer. The protocol suite used with the Internet is known as Transmission Control Protocol and Internet Protocol (TCP/IP). The Internet protocol acts as a relay to move a block ofdatafrom one host, through one or more routers, to another host. This protocol is connectionless meaning data are transferredfrom one entity to another without the prior mutual construction of a connection. Because it is unreliable, the IP usually used together with TCP. The TCP is implemented only in the end system, it keeps track of the blocks of data to assure that all are delivered reliably to the appropriate application.
