In introducing this special Japan issue of Language, Culture and Curriculum, this article provides some background on Japan and Japanese society and offers relev3nt references to works from a variety of fields that provide additional information. The article also introduces each of the papers in this issue and provides an appendix of helpful contacts where readers may obtain further perspectives (and access up-to-date information and research) on language learning and teaching in Japan.
