Isi artikelCitric acid is an organic acid produced in a large amount and produced via fermentation process. Production of citric acid is done in two steps, i. e. fermentation itself and recovery of citric acif from fermentation broth. Recovery of citric acid id done via two different steps, i. e. liquid extractiona nd lime sulfuric acid method. But both of these methods need large amount of chemical and involve phase change, which could degrade quality of citric acid. To overcome such problems, some scientists have tried to use membrane, especially electrodialysis, to recover citric acid. Electrodialysis is a membrane process, which uses ion exchange membranes as anion selective and potential gradient between anode and cathode as driving force for ions movement. This research was done to examine pH effect during electrodialysis of citric acid on limiting current, resistances in concentrated compartments, and mass transfer rate of citric acid from diluate compartments (compartments with little ions) to concentrated comaptments (compartments with much ions). From the experiment it has been found that at gh pH, the limiting current was high. And mass transfer rate was fater at high pH. At pH = 4.58 mass transfer rate reach 0,00952 eq. l (-2). m (-2). minutes (-1).
