Cultural scripts in the Balinese folklore "pan balang tamak": study based on dimensions of cultural meaning

Sosial values in people's lives can be textualized, grammaticalized, and even verbalized into written text, such as folklore using the model of cultural scripts. In addition, it contains of cultural meaning. To see the cultural meaning of the folklore, a perspective or dimension comprehensively and holistically can make it understandable. Based on this claim, this paper focuses and aims to see the cultural scripts in the folklore based on the dimensions of cultural meaning. A very precise strategy of observation needs to be applied of which the approach used was qualitative one. Data were collected from a folklore entitled Pan Balang Tamak and were analyzed based on dimensions of meaning and cultural scripts. The result of the analysis showed that (1) there are four dimensions of cultural meaning: a) situational-behavioral dimension that emphasize on cultural meaning which is based on situation and context of communication, usage, and reaction to speech; b) Linguistic-extralinguistic dimension; c) intraorganistic and extra-organistic dimension which is the cultural meaning derived from the individual's cognitive and the individual's affective; d) The general-particular dimension which is based on and determined by the types of speech; (2) Cultural scripts can be configured by using low-level scripts with exponents of philosophical aspects, clear entities, processes and mechamism, and results. The moral value of the Pan Balak Tamak folklore is that ingenuity should not be done to cunn or deceives others. It should be used to help people in need.
