Thanking is used to strengthen the bonds between people. This study attempted to reveal the most frequently-used thanking strategis in Bugis language and the phrases Bugis people use to show their gratitude. A discourse completion task (DCT) was applied, representing various situations where the participants were asked to write down the terms they use to thank others. The participants involved 24 people of different age, sex, educational and working backgrounds. The data analysis applied is a modified taxonomy created by Cheng (2005) consisting of seven strategies to express gratitude. The results revealed that thanking by using the Indonesian phrases terima kasih, lit. accept (this) love ‘thank you’, is the most common strategy when Bugis people show their gratitude.
