The goal of this paper is to analyze the needs of Sociology students at Faculty of Social Science, State University of Gorontalo for English language, and to analyze learning materials of other courses as references in designing appropriate syllabus of English course based on need analysis. This study adopted the needs analysis framework suggested by Hutchinson and Waters (1994) focusing on target needs and learning needs. This study presents the results of questionnaire and interview designed to gather the opinion of students (50 students), 2 English lecturers, the head of Sociology students, and the Dean of Social Science Faculty on teaching and learning English for specific purposes, and the basis of designing syllabus based on need analysis. English learning in non-English majors in university is known as English for Specific Purposes. Tomlinson (2006, p.306) defines that English for Specific Purposes is “an umbrella term that refers to the teaching of English to students who are learning the language for a particular work or study-related reason English for Occupational Purposes (EOP) and English for Academic Purposes”. Thus, it reflects to the teaching English that accommodates student’s needs. The result of study indicates that Sociology students need English language for academic study. The students goal of learning English is to be able to communicate English with other people, and the level of English students proficiency is mostly intermediate. All the English proficiency addition to speaking skill and pronunciation are regarded as important to the students. Instead, the listening skill is difficult for students. The students have a variety of learning needs mostly in small group, using ICT, and learning by fun.
